There is no known cure for dandruff.
Antifungal shampoos – containing ketoconazole, ciclopirox, zinc pyrithione and selenium disulfide are effective in dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis.
Application of topical steroids and shampoos, shampoos with coal-tar and keratolytic agents are also useful.

What is dandruff ?

Mild to moderate flaking of scalp with or without itching is recognised as dandruff. Dandruff affects about half of adults, with males more often affected than females. Onset is usually at puberty and it becomes less common after the age of 50.
How does it differ from seborrhoeic dermatitis ?

A more severe form of the flaking of scalp, which includes inflammation of the skin, is known as seborrhoeic dermatitis. Dandruff is a skin condition that mainly affects the scalp Seborrhoeic dermatitis affects not only scalp but also face (eye-brows, naso-labial crease, earlobes and beard), underarms, centre of back and chest and sometimes groins. Patients with dandruff have thin, dry, and fine flakes while patients with seborrhoic dermatitis tend to have oily skin and also large, thick and oily flakes. Dandruff and seborrhoic dermatitis become worse in dry and cold climate.
What causes dandruff ?

The cause is unclear but believed to involve a number of genetic and environmental factors.
If I have flaking of scalp with or without itching, Is it always dandruff or seborrhoic dermatitis ?

Need not be. Other diseases like psoriasis of scalp, Atopic dermatitis and fungal infections of scalp can cause flaking of scalp along with itching. Your dermatologist can differentiate these diseases and initiate proper treatment.
